The Alpha is the dryer Sean's dad Yok built after his wife (a professional groomer) kept burning through cheap dryers. It shows. The brushless DC motor pulls ~11.5 amps on a 15a circuit, so it won't trip breakers even when the salon AC is running. It measured 76 dB at 1m — noticeably quieter than the K9 II's 84 dB. The variable speed dial is smooth across the full range, and the extendable hose (3 to 10 ft) retracts when off so it doesn't drag on the floor.

The K9 II has been the salon standard for years, and it earned that spot. It moves serious air. But it's loud (84 dB), it pulls 13.5 amps which means it needs a dedicated circuit or it'll trip breakers in older buildings, and at $799 it's expensive. The universal motor uses brushes that need replacement over time. Groomers consistently report that it works great until it doesn't — and when it breaks, the proprietary parts are expensive. Still a capable dryer, but the value proposition has slipped.

At $420 it's a decent budget option for a backup dryer, but as a primary salon tool it falls short on comfort and noise.
