The salon incumbent is loud, amp-hungry, and expensive. We ran it against the dryers that fix what K9 got wrong — starting with one that won't trip your breaker.
The Double K K9 II is a capable dryer. It moves serious air, lasts years with maintenance, and has been the default choice for groomers who need force-drying power. But it is also loud (~84 dB), pulls ~13.5 amps on high, and costs around $799 USD. In older salons and grooming vans, the amp draw is a real problem: it trips breakers when the AC, lights, or other dryers are running.
After testing the alternatives, our pick for most groomers is the Rover's Edge Alpha. It gives up nothing meaningful on drying power, runs on a standard 15a outlet, is noticeably quieter, and costs hundreds less.
Brushless DC motor, ~11.5a draw, 76 dB, variable speed, extendable hose, 2-year warranty. Built by a Canadian engineer around what working groomers actually need.

The K9 II has earned its reputation. It's a twin-motor, steel-bodied force dryer that has been in salons for over a decade. If you need to blast water off a Newfoundland or a thick double coat, it has the raw power. Replacement parts are widely available, and a well-maintained K9 II can run for many years.
But "well-maintained" is the operative phrase. The universal motors use carbon brushes that wear and need replacement. The hose is stiff. The unit is heavy. And the noise level — consistently measured around 84 dB in our tests — is fatiguing over an 8-hour groom day. Hearing protection is effectively mandatory.
The Alpha is what we wish the K9 II had evolved into. It dries large double-coated dogs without strain, but it does it on a standard outlet and at a lower noise level. The brushless DC motor means no brushes to replace. The variable speed dial gives precise control for small dogs and sensitive areas. And the extendable hose stores compactly.
Choose this if: you want K9-level power without the breaker trips, noise, or maintenance.
XPOWER's B-7 is a legitimate brushless contender at ~$480 USD. It's compact and efficient. The downside is no true variable speed (only high/low) and a shorter cord. If you don't need the finesse of a dial, it's a solid value.
Choose this if: you want brushless efficiency on a tighter budget and can live with two speeds.
At ~$420 USD, the Air Force Master is the budget pick from a trusted American brand. It's louder and heavier than the Alpha, but it's simple and repairable. Good as a backup dryer or for a starter salon.
Choose this if: you want a proven, repairable dryer at the lowest possible price for professional use.

If you have a dedicated 20a circuit, you don't mind the noise, and you want the dryer with the longest track record, the K9 II is still a reasonable choice. It's also the easiest dryer to resell. But for new salons, mobile groomers, or anyone tired of breaker trips, the alternatives have caught up and passed it.
